Rare Handcraft Patek Philippe Wristwatch Sold at Windsor Jewelers

October 31st, 2019

World renowned watchmaker, Patek Philippe, produces a very limited number of Minute Repeaters and Rare Handcrafts worldwide and this is the first to be delivered to the US, making the sale of this timepiece a momentous occasion.

Titled "Eagles in Flight", the watch depicts two eagles in full flight and combat, symbolizing the great power of these kings of the bird species. Considered a Rare Handcraft piece, the dial is beautifully crafted in grand feu cloisonné enamel and signed by Anita Porchet, one of the foremost enamelers in this traditional fine art technique. Cloisonné enameling consists of tracing the outline of a specific design in fine, gold wire and then filling in the cells with colored enamel powders which are vitrified by successive firings in a kiln.

The Ref. 5538G is considered a grand complication because of the minute repeater and tourbillon complications. Coveted by collectors, minute repeaters are among the rarest and most complicated timepieces in the world and considered masterpieces of precision and mechanical engineering, taking nearly two years to produce. This mechanical watch chimes the time on demand by activating a push or slide-piece which sounds the time using separate tones for hours, quarter-hours and minutes. Mr. Thierry Stern, President of Patek Philippe, personally listens to each and every minute repeater after they are produced to ensure they meet the stringent standards of the Patek Philippe seal.
